Situated between moor and sea, not far from the ancient village of Modbury, this makes a splendid base from which to explore South Devon. It’s a bit of a dilemma whether to make for Dartmoor and the silence and solitude, the tumbling streams and the long views, or go south and seek out some of the small villages of the South Hams, the tiny sandy coves and the Coastal Path which follows the south western peninsula with dogged persistence from Dorset round to Somerset. Either way you’ll win, for both are absorbing. For a shopping spree, try Plymouth.
